Sim Only Mobile Review – CMobile Mobile Plans (May 2015)
CMobile, the latest mobile offer to launch using both the Telstra 3G and revamped Vodafone 3G+ networks is now live and taking orders. Reading through the website we have the same old promise of not ripping customers off etc and I am sure like every other mobile plan provider, CMobile has every intention of making good on that promise. What about the plans and the pricing? CMobile has launched with two sets of plans, the CRed and the CBlue BYO Mobile Plans. The CRed plans use the Vodafone network and start with the Casual plan which has call rates of 12c/min, no flagfall, 12c TXT and 2c/MB. This plan has no inclusions and a requirement that you spend a minimum of $20 per year. In fact your first $20 is taken upon sign up along with $4.90 for the SIM card. This could be a great offers for customers who need their phone only occasionally. In addition to the CRed Casual plan, CMobile also offers CRed $9.90 with $15 credit (50, 2 min calls), unlimited CMobile calls, 15c/min call and TXT rate. 150MB data included and excess data is 5c/MB with p/10KB charges.
From here, the price per minute for calls starts to drop offering you greater value. CRed $19.90 gives you $45 in calls/TXT with a call rate of 15c/min. This equates to some 150, 2 min calls. Data allowance is higher at 500MB and you still get unlimited calls to CMobile. Next step up is the CRed $29.90 plan with $75 in calls. Also at 15c/min you get 250, 2 min calls, unlimited CMobile calls and 1GB of 3G data. CRed has two unlimited offers, the first at $39.90 includes unlimited local calls and messaging plus 2GB for $39.90 plan. The second for $59.90 offers much the same but data is 4GB. Data increments for all but the CMobile Casual plan is p/10KB which is pretty good with excess charged at 5c/MB. All CMobile Red customers (excludes the PAYG option) can call other CMobile Red customers for free.
Access to part of the Telstra 3G network is through the CBlue Plans and as you would expect offer much less in call and data value. Depending on where you live this could be important but if you live in a capital city and have tried Vodafone recently without any issues, then the extra cost of Telstra might not be worth it. With speed restriction lifted, the network access is almost as good as NextG but equal in performance.
Call rates for the CBlue plans is fixed at 15c/min, with 15c TXT and 25c/MB charged p/MB.
The CBlue Starter plan is $14.90/mth with $15 in credit and 150MB data. Total 2 minute calls is 50. As a Telstra plan it is OK and fares better than a similar plan from ThinkMobile for $15 and $100 in calls ($2.38 for a 2 min call).
With the CBlue $19.90 you get $22.50 in calls and 500MB. Total 2 minute calls is 75. Think Mobile has a $25 plan with $250 in calls which equates to 105, 2 min calls. Step up from here and you have the CMobile CBlue $29.90 plan with $37.50 in calls and 800MB. This plan equates to 125, 2 min calls and at this stage you could also compare this with Telstra prepaid. The Telstra Prepaid Freedom offers $250 credit (115, 2 minute calls) and 1.3GB.
CMobile also offers the CBlue $39.90 with $52.50 in calls and 1.5GB. Total 2 min calls on offer here are 175. Think Mobile has an equivalent offer at $45/mth which offers $400 in call value (168, 2 min calls). You can also compare it to a $50 recharge on Telstra Prepaid Freedom with $1000 in calls (460, 2 min calls) and 2.5GB (NextG or 4G). CMobile has the CBlue $49.90 which has $75 in call value and 1.5GB and finally the latest inclusion is the $59.90 offer with $90 in calls/messaging (300, 2 min calls) and 3GB of data.
At some levels the CMobile Telstra plans are competitive but overall they do fall a little behind Telstra directly which I think is a bit of a shame given the limitations in coverage (minimal really) and speed (could be significant if you have a 4G smartphone). Overall however CMobile plans are a great alternative to other offers using part of the Telstra 3G network.
1: Call rate per minute. ^Rates charged per 30 secs. 2: Cost of a 2 Min Call + Number of 2 min calls with credit provided.
