Prepaid Mobile Review – Telstra Prepaid (April 2012)

Telstra realised in 2011 that in order to build its customer base, prepaid mobile plans where going to have to play a key role. Over 2011 they re-energised their plans, launched some new ones and closed some older ones. Today they have some very popular plans and some very competitive offers. Price competitiveness has never really been a key priority for Telstra, however the market has moved and Optus has very good coverage today (Vodafone has also invested in their network after the horror of 2011).This review covers two key plans, the Prepaid Cap Encore range and Simplicity. Prepaid Cap Encore is the latest iteration of the Telstra Prepaid Caps. The value in the plans has improved quite a bit since they where launched and a major improvement has also been seen in the data on offer. Over the past few months they moved from per megabyte increments to per Kilobyte, which offers great value and in the world of prepaid is relatively unknown. The only disappointment I have in the Encore range is that the data allowance has actually been reduced for both the $30 and $40 recharge recently, going from 500MB to 400MB and 1Gb to 800MB respectively. I don’t enjoy seeing data go backwards particularly from a large player like Telstra. The Encore has 5 entry points, the $30 recharge offers $250 in calls ($2.17 for a 2 minute call) and 400MB of data. The next step is $40 with $550 in calls and 800MB, then we move to $500 in calls and 2GB of data at $50, $60 offers 3GB and $1500 in calls and finally $100 offers $2000 in calls and 4GB.At the $40 range the Telstra offer is OK. Optus offers $600 in calls and 1GB (plus unlimited Txt and social media), Boost has unlimited calls and 3GB and Woolworths has $500 in calls ($250 to Woolworths) and 5GB for $30. The offer is competitive but not the best, although the per KB increments do offer you good value.

What the Prepaid Cap Encore is also offering at the moment is unlimited evening calls from 6pm to 6am every day of the week, although this does have and expiry which is constantly being extended.

Simplicity is a new plan (6 months old). This is the cheapest plan I have ever seen from Telstra. 15c/min calls, 12c Txt and 10c/MB is very competitive and if you don’t use your phone a lot, this could be a great plan, particularly if you can spend less than $10 per month. You get the Telstra coverage and the great rates. What also comes with this plan is some competitive international call rates. Now don’t expect Telstra to be the cheapest here but 15c/min is available to these countries Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Germany, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, USA, Vietnam.

So far I like what I see from Telstra, I just hope they don’t start going backwards with their offers.

Notes:
1 – rate per 30 seconds. ^Charged in 1 min blocks
2 – expiry period in days
3 – cost of a 2 minute call. Number of 2 minute calls made using credit provided to any network (excludes calls within network).
Where no minimum credit is indicated, $20 is used.
