Prepaid Mobile Review – Boost Mobile

February 2011
Boost Mobile is an Optus service with a major focus being on the youth market, particularly given that each of its plans carry either very cheap or bonus texts. The product range has undergone a few changes over the past 12 months with the latest range now down to 3 main products, 1c text, Free Text, Super Cap and the new Day 2 Day offer. The 1c Text plan is a bit of a gem if that is what you mainly spend your time doing. Kids at school would find this quite appealing and at 1c you can go a little crazy and not worry too much that you will break the bank. Call rates at 39c per 30 sec with a 30c flagfall is the cheapest Boost is offering at the moment but is obviously on the high side when compared to what else is on the market today. Two recharge options are available, $30 & $40, each comes with a 30 day expiry. However no plan is perfect and if you want really cheap text, you won’t get better than 1c. The 1c text plan now also boasts upto 300MB of data.It will be interesting to see how it continues to compete with the likes of Crazy John’s Flat Chatwhich offers 1c text (100 per day) and a 10c call rate.Free Text lets you take a step up and offers credit that you can use with any network plus bonus text. You start with $25 credit (plus 100 free text) and then you gradually increase until the you reach $70 in credit with the added bonus of 300 text. Again if texting is something that you might be after, this could be for you. I think this plan lacks a bit of bite though. The free text element just doesn’t excite me like the 1c plan does.

The Super Caps are Boost’s answer to Vodafone’s Flexicredit, well that is what I compare them to. In comparison, for $29 Vodafone offer $150 credit for calls to anyone and $150 to Vodafone + 500MB. Credit lasts for 30 days. For $25 Boost gives you $25 mycredit and $175 my bonus + 200MB. The difference is that mycredit can be used anywhere including international calls. Credit lasts for 60.

As you spend more, Vodafone gives you $650 credit to anyone and $850 credit to Vodafone + 4GB for $79 per month. Boost’s equivalent gives $70 MyCredit, $1130 Mybonus plus 4GB. So the plans are very comparable.

The latest addition is the Day 2 Day offer, which is Boost’s version of the Optus Dollar Days offer. Spend $3 p/day and you receive unlimited sms/mms + national calls + mobile calls + mobile data+ free social networking.

In all a very comprehensive portfolio of prepaid plans by Boost.
