Lebara is a well known international service that was launched in Australia last year to capitalise on the large international student market in Australia that calls friends and family on a regular basis. Obviously prepaid calling cards are a key competitor to Lebara’s offer and so are the growing international calling rates offers now made available by prepaid mobile plan providers like Optus, Vodafone and even gotalk. Calling rates at 15c per min as they promote them are pretty good, even with a 29c flagfall. Txt at 15c is on the high side. The key with this program if you are using it in Australia is to get your friends onto it so that you can call each other for free (exc flagfall). First 10 mins to Lebara is free. And with credits lasting for 90 days, its a pretty good deal, particularly for the cost conscious student. Lebara also offers 1MB free data each data which can help you view a few emails and see some light internet pages. From there additional data usage costs 5c/MB. Comparing international calling rates is difficult, so I have listed a sample of them below and you can compare them for yourself. Go-Talk. Virgin and Optus also have offers targeting this market with offers that now also include competitive international calling rates. I recently trialed their free sim card offer and found it to be very good and easy to use. The set up was easy enough and the rates where as they stated so I am happy to recommend it as a service. You can read the Lebara review here. They currently have a Free Sim Offer which comes with a some basic credit. You can then recharge for $10. Lebara Mobile uses the Vodafone network.
In 2011, Lebara launched their Mega Plan which is a prepaid unlimited plan. Priced at the standard $39.90 you received unlimited local and mobile calls plus 1GB of data. Some call types like video calls are excluded but what Lebara Mobile offers is $10 of additional credit which you can use for anything you like eg international calls, video calls and even additional internet usage.
