Prepaid Mobile Review – Optus Prepaid (April 2014)

My review of Optus prepaid mobile has taken far longer than I would have hoped. I had the unfortunate opportunity to experience a shopping cart malfunction which saw me order the sim but it was never processed (Optus site went down at the same time). Having contact the social media team, I was encouraged to try again and did. This time I ordered successfully and directed the delivery to my “day job” address but failed to list the company name. The package made it all the way but was knocked back by the AustPost delivery process. Having been charged already, I contacted the social media team again and was told that they would mail me a starter kit. Two days later it was in the mail but it was for Woolworths Mobile (also Optus) and the sim was standard sim not a microsim. Back to social media for a third time and we finally had lift off with an active sim. The next challenge was the sim card. Whilst no one recommends you go get your sim chopped, Dicks Smith does it for $5 and it works fine.

Optus has a broad range of prepaid mobile plans. My specific interest as part of this review is Prepaid Social as this is the only plan offering any real data options at the moment that are also 4G enabled. Unlike Telstra which makes 4G ok for all prepaid plans, Optus is a lot more limiting (2 Days just added). Optus Prepaid Social gives you unlimited TXT (anyone network) and calls to Optus numbers (not resellers). On top of that you receive a general credit allowance which varies by the amount you recharge eg $30 offers 250 minutes and can be used for any network plus a selection of international destinations eg China, UK, USA and NZ. On top of this you also have an allowance equal to your recharge amount (My Credit) eg $30 which can be used for pretty much anything you want. Call rates are in minutes eg $30 buys you 250 minutes of calls (125, 2 minute calls).

In terms of data you receive unlimited Facebook/Twitter access and with a $30 recharge you get 500MB data. Data is counted in p/MB increments (except for 4G users which get is p/KB). Minimum recharge level is $30, max is $100 and credit expiry is 28 days. There is no credit rollover should you recharge prior to expiry.

A quick round up of the other Optus prepaid plans: Optus $2 Days is still very popular with unlimited calls, TXT, MMS and 500MB for just $2 every day. You are only charged when you use the service, and a $30 recharge will last you 30 days, $100 = 100 days. This option now has 4G access. Optus Prepaid Long Expiry Plan is useful but it has a maximum of 186 days, it doesn’t quite compete with the likes of other 365 day plans eg Telstra or Aldi. Connect 4 Less has very competitive rates with domestic calls at just 10c/min with a 23c flagfall, internationally they are also very competitive and you can see the rates here. Crew Cap has a greater focus on Optus calls and comes with a low data allowance. It’s expiry is 60 days. Credit will rollover for Connect for Less, Crew Cap, Long Expiry and $2 Days.

4G Coverage:
I have captured what Optus Prepaid currently offers in terms of 4G coverage in both Melbourne and Sydney. optus 4g coverage mapThere are obviously limitations at the moment but it will be growing. You do need the handset however.

Speed Test:
My speed test has been limited to one outer suburb (my home) and it actually tested higher than Telstra in terms of downloads. Uploads where lower than Telstra’s.

My existing plan is through Live Connected using at 3G sim card. I tested this just prior to the 4G Optus sim and you can see the difference is significant.

3G Sim: 50 msec ping, 2.44Mbps download and 1.16Mbps upload. But at non peak times I can also achieve 3G speeds of 6.69Mbps download.

4G Sim: 38 msec ping, 17.47Mbps download and 1.22Mbps upload. I have not doubt that if I kept testing the speeds would have gone up and down and therefore this is no max or minimum indication but it does give you an example of what can be achieved.

As I also experienced with my Telstra 4G sim, once installed the apps on my phone jumped at the opportunity to update themselves. Optus gives you p/KB data increments when you access the 4G network.

My Usage:

As mentioned, getting a hold of the sim card and having it activated was a bit of an ordeal that I can share some blame for but not all. Upon activating my account however (via the Social Media team), my access to the Optus website to view usage was not enabled. This required yet another Optus customer service interaction which I did via their chat support. It proved quick and painless and within 30 minutes had my login emails.

Whilst writing this review, I inserted the Optus sim again so that I could run a few more tests and usage more of my data. What I discovered was that by surfing to the Optus website and clicking My Account, it logged in automatically and showed me my account details below. There was no need for a mobile number or even password, it just worked.

optus prepaid account

The Optus Prepaid Social $30 recharge normally gives you 500MB data (I was lucky enough to have purchased during a double your allowance offer) and my total data access was 1GB. As you can see though even after some limited access over 100MB was consumed. During this access I viewed a few websites, emailed an image (279KB), checked my email. No video or anything overly consuming.

Whilst data increments are p/KB, expect to use much more data with your 4G phone than your 3G phone even if your usage patterns don’t change.

Pros:

  • Speeds are very fast at the moment and if you demand performance then 4G is the way to go. Enjoy it while it lasts.
  • $30 buys you 500MB (charged p/KB) with the bonus of unlimited social media access. This is a better data offer than what Telstra has through Prepaid Cap Encore.
  • Optus’ social media and chat services are pretty good to deal. The sending of a Woolworths sim was confusing but did show that Optus can turn 4G even with a Woolworths sim.
  • Having to chop my sim was not the ideal experience but it did work fine.
  • Your call allowance can be used for international calls but do check the call rates.

Cons:

  • You do use the data quicker than on the 3G network even though data increments are per KB with Optus Prepaid Social and $ Days. With my regular Live Connected 3G plan, I would use under 1GB per month. My 4G usage in the limited hours I have had it, is unlikely to last me more than 1 week.
  • Be prepared to spend more than what you do via your 3G network. Note however that there are providers like Vaya (Optus network) offering much better 4G value than this plan.

Would I swap?
I would need to personally enter at the $50 recharge level which is much more than I spend today to justify the data speed. If they also offered credit rollover it would go someway in giving you some protection and a buffer on those months where you don’t have lots of usage. More and more 4G offers are coming to the market, so there are alternative options.
