| Boost Mobile Prepaid Plans Review – May 2013 | |||||||||||
| Boost Mobile launched on the Telstra 3G Network in early March 2013 following a long relationship with Optus. Following the announcement of the split and the move the Telstra, Boost customers where given the choice of continuing to recharge directly with Optus or porting their number across to a new Boost account. Stats on how many stayed and didn’t are yet to be published.What is different about the new Boost offer? Boost now offers only one prepaid mobile plan. The UNLTD plan starts with $10 offering unlimited calls/TXT to standard national numbers + MessageBank retrieval & 13/1300/1800 numbers plus 500MB data and 5 days to use it. The second plan is at $20 with a similar talk offer but 1GB data and 15 days to use it. Finally at $40 the offer expands to 3GB of data and 30 days to use it. Boost was the first to offer an unlimited prepaid mobile deal. Amaysim followed and then so did everyone else.The real differentiation here for Boost however is the real Telstra 3G (NextG) data experience. So whilst Kogan and Aldi can boast about being with the Telstra network, Boost goes one step further with yet faster speeds and higher coverage. You can compare the coverage maps below.Sign-up Process Sign up is really easy and completed online. It took under 5 minutes and the sim card cost me just $2. ID is required including either passport or driver’s license. An email confirmation is then issued by Boost.24 hours after the order was made online, I received an email from Telstra advising me that the order was being filled and I could monitor the delivery online. Within 36 hours the delivery van appeared with the sim kit.In order to receive the sim starter kit, I needed to show the actual ID that I signed up with. So bare this in mind if you are buying the service for someone else eg child or parent, you will need to be present in order to accept the order.Activation Opened the Starter Kit and the $2 sim was included plus a welcome kit which details how to activate and recharge. These are all standard with every carrier. Activation had to be completed via telephone. There was no option for online activation. The number to call is 1258881. The time was 9pm and I tried calling the number. They picked it up within one ring. The Call Centre is obviously overseas based but the consultant was very helpful. I was required to read out the Sim Serial and Service Number which are printed on the sim card. He then asked me for my personal details including full name, address, Date of Birth and Drivers License. I was advised that activation would take up to 24 hours but usually an hour or so. He told me to insert the sim and await for the welcome TXT message advising me that all was activated. This waiting period is probably the first frustration I have had so far. Not knowing if it will take minutes or hours. It actually took minutes that is less than 30 minutes anyway. A couple of tips here if you are an Optus or Vodafone customer. Make sure to visit your phone settings under Network Operators and to select and add Telstra, otherwise pointing to either Optus or Vodafone will not get the activation working. With an activated account, I received a few TXTs from Boost advising me that my balance was quite low. I clicked on the link within the TXT to see my balance (see image below): Recharging Putting the system to the test. I will admit that I don’t have the newest of mobile smart phones. One of the challenges I have had with my Live Connected service has been making calls that stay connected whilst running a 3G service. Most of the time I have to run the phone using the 2G network to have calls that stay connected. Having swapped sim cards this is a phone issue I assume. Calls Data Value for money. Unlimited calls/TXT, message bank, 1300/1800 calls and 3GB of data on the NextG network is great. If you appreciate faster internet speeds and better phone connection, the additional money you spend with Boost is most likely worth it. Consider what one bad phone call can cost you eg miss a job opportunity, make 3 calls instead of one just to complete a conversation. It all adds up. Coverage
